The Polar Bear Plunge is a fun-packed family event when hardy souls – many in fancy dress – celebrate the New Year by taking a dip in the icy waters of the St Albans Sub Aqua Club’s outdoor pool – all for charity!
Past plungers have included penguins and elves, Thor, a stormtrooper, a hotdog and ketchup, hippies and pirates, a family of rainbows and the pubs of St Albans. Families, workmates and sports teams all come to Plunge.

The first St Albans’ Polar Bear Plunge took place in 2016. The funds raised went to the charities Ed2NorthPole was supporting on his epic trek to the North Pole. As the adventurous people of St Albans and beyond seemed to love donning fancy dress and jumping into icy water for charity as a bracing start to their New Year, the event has returned every New Year’s Day since. The St Albans Sub Aqua Club has generously continued to donate their facilities. So far the event has raised over £25,000 for charitable causes.
Much-loved local charity Earthworks St Albans has taken over from Clare and Ed Suttie and the Polar Bear Plunge lives on! All profits continue to go to charity. As host charity, Earthworks receives 70%, and our guest charity receives 30% of proceeds.

In 2020/21, due to restrictions, our Polar Bear Plunge will be a socially-distanced and sustainable ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Keep the plunge spirit alive and raise funds for local charities by taking part at home and on social media!
